DITA BARK (ALSTONIA SCHOLARIS)
Alstonia scholaris is an evergreen tropical tree in the family of apocynaceae, commonly called as devils tree, dita bark and saptaparna. Different parts of it are used as traditional medicine as well as it is proven to have to treat malaria, rheumatism, fever, skin diseases, dysentery .
Boonei has been listed in the African Pharmacopoeia as an antimalarial drug
The bark is used
- To cure skin diseases and rheumatism;
- The root juice is taken with milk to cure leprosy;
- Fresh bark is put in water to draw out the latex, which is taken orally in case of tuberculosis;
- Dried powder is administered orally to cure diarrhoea;
- Bark extract is useful in case of intestinal worms.
It is used in traditional medicine
- The treatment of fever.
- Painful micturition.
- Insomnia.
- Chronic diarrhoea.
- Rheumatic pains as antivenom for snake bites
- The treatment of arrow poisoning.
- The treatment of malaria.
- Intestinal helminthes.
