SWEET FLAG ROOT (ACORUS CALAMUS)
Calamus is also used as a calming medicine (sedative), to induce sweating, and to treat rheumatoid arthritis and stroke. Some people chew calamus to remove the smell of tobacco, as a stimulant, to increase their sense of well-being, and as a hallucinogen.
Sweet flag is also used externally to treat skin eruptions, rheumatic pains and neuralgia. An infusion of the root can bring about an abortion whilst chewing the root alleviates toothache. It is a folk remedy for arthritis, cancer, convulsions, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, epilepsy etc
TRADITIONAL MEDICINAL USES
The rhizomes of sweet flag (Acorus calamus) are used for numerous medicinal purposes. The herb is used both internally as well as externally. In rheumatism, rheumatic fever and inflamed joints, the paste applied externally alleviates the pain and swelling.
